Responsible sourcing

Our Commitment to Responsible Sourcing

WHEN WE ARE INSPIRED BY NATURE EVERY DAY, WE CANNOT IGNORE ITS FRAGILITY.

At a time when many of our planet’s ecosystems are under threat, Clarins advocates for a more sustainable form of agriculture that protects both people and the planet.

THE SOURCING OF OUR INGREDIENTS IS AT THE HEART OF THIS RESPONSIBLE APPROACH.

Responsible sourcing

Domaine Clarins

Exceptional raw materials sourced from regenerative agriculture

Located at an altitude of 1,400 metres in the French Alps, Domaine Clarins is our open-air laboratory and farm, directly inspired by regenerative agriculture.* Whether plants are cultivated or picked from the wild, all of our raw ingredients benefit from this high-quality environment, leaving them packed full of nutrients and active skincare ingredients.

*Regenerative agriculture is a responsible form of agriculture that protects the soil while encouraging biodiversity.

PLANTS ARE CULTIVATED ACCORDING TO THE SEASONS AND WITH THE GREATEST RESPECT FOR NATURE

Alpine rose

At Domaine Clarins, we harvest more than 2.5 tonnes of fresh raw ingredients each year, hand-picking wherever possible to preserve their freshness and maximise their efficacy.

We use this research facility to study new plant-based active ingredients, and to source many of the ingredients that are already being used in our treatments. This controlled approach enables us to provide the highest standards of quality, safety, and 100% traceability from field to jar, helping us to do all we can to reduce our environmental impact.

Domaine Clarins is not open to the public, but the beauty of this unspoiled land is visible from a distance. Explore this majestic site, where the future of beauty is being written, with our virtual tour.

OBJECTIVE: INCREASED TRACEABILITY AND 100% SUSTAINABLE SOURCING IN 2025

In 2021, we took another step forward by introducing a rigorous sourcing policy that covers all our raw materials.

And in line with our commitment to transparency, you can trace these ingredients yourself with the Clarins T.R.U.S.T. platform. Scan the QR code on your product to track its journey from the field to your home.

Plants

Beauty from nature

Clarins research is inspired by nature.Today, 80% of the active ingredients used in our formulas come from a private herbarium of over 200 plants - our greatest asset.

We are always trying to improve the quality and traceability of our supply chains, and continue to give priority to those that respect the planet, plants and people.

Clarins Research has established criteria that any new species joining our catalogue must meet, with a particular attention to sustainable agricultural practices.

NATURE FIRST

At Clarins, more than 81% of the active ingredients used are of natural origin. The remaining 19% is made up of synthetic ingredients, which are only used when they are essential to the safety, effectiveness or sensoriality of our formulas. We are always looking for natural alternatives.

Our tripartite approach

Natural derivatives

Traceability and green chemistry

Naturally-derived ingredients are substances of natural origin - vegetable or mineral - which have undergone modifications to provide beneficial properties for the skin. This includes certain active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, delivery systems and agro-sourced solvents. For these ingredients, we choose materials that are easily biodegradable and whose manufacturing processes respect the principles of green chemistry. We also ensure they can be traced back to the country of origin. For each of these supply chains, we work in partnership with our suppliers to create programmes that protect biodiversity and local communities.
