The unassuming patchouli originates from Southeast Asia, where it is held in very high regard. The privilege of holy men in India, for many it symbolises love, fertility and prosperity. Prized by English traders in the 19th century, patchouli leaves were used to wrap precious cargos of cashmere and silk to protect them from moths. In the field of perfumery, the essential oil extracted from patchouli leaves is popular for its powerful spicy, amber and musk fragrance.
