Crowberry Empetrum nigrum
Location:
Norway
This evergreen bush has needle-like leaves and grows only in peat bogs, an ecosystem that is cold, humid and acid all at the same time. This plant grows well in Alaska, Canada, Finland and Norway where its small black berries are an integral part of these countries culinary cultures due to their rich vitamin and mineral content. In medicine, Crowberry is traditionally used for its veinotonic action, while the leaves and roots are used for their diuretic and ophthalmic virtues. Recently, scientists discovered that Crowberry contained flavonoids. These natural substances are recognized for their draining, soothing, anit-oxidant properties and for their capacity to inhibit the enzymes responsible for the break down of collagen and elastin fibers.
