Baobab Adansonia digitata
Location:
According to legend, God pulled the baobab out of Heaven and replanted it on Earth upside down because it was too proud... And indeed the tree does appear « upside down » with its large, swollen trunk topped by gnarled branches that resemble enormous roots. The baobab is an emblematic tree of sub-saharan Africa and like the shea, is also known as the « tree of life ». It stands out for its enormous size, incredible lifespan (some claim around 5,000 years) and multiple uses and benefits. The bark is used to make rope, the fruit is made into a lime-flavoured drink very popular with African children while its leaves are used in cooking but also for their toning, anti-inflammatory and anti-diarrhoeal benefits. In cosmetics, Clarins Laboratories have demonstrated the capacity of baobab leaves, which are rich in anti-free radical flavonoids, to protect cellular communication against the harmful effects of UV. By combining senna, olive, plane tree and pea with baobab, Clarins Laboratories created Phyto-Sunactyl 2, the exclusive complex present in Clarins sun products which protects skin cells and their genetic inheritance against the sun’s aggressions.
